What is an Intimacy Professional?

An Intimacy Professional works with productions to safely and professionally tell stories of heightened content. This includes moments of nudity, sexual simulation, and other intimate situations.

What do you do?

I think of intimacy work as three fold: I am an advocate for actors and for everyone in production. I ensure that boundaries are respected and consent is upheld. I am a liaison between departments, working to communicate the needs of actors with costumes, props, legal, etc. And I am a choreographer who is trained to assist a director in telling intimate stories through movement.

What is the difference between an Intimacy Director and an Intimacy Coordinator?

An Intimacy Director is used for theatre and live production. Intimacy Coordinators work in film, television, and other on screen media. I work professionally as both an ID and an IC.

What are your rates?

Rates are on a sliding scale based on production. Please reach out via email for more information.

Who is Emila Ray?

I am a SAG-certified Intimacy coordinator, having received training with CINTIMA, IDC, and Heartland Intimacy, as well as on-set and on-stage experience. Intimacy work has always been a combination of my strengths and everything I care about.

I remember exactly how I felt when I learned about the existence and position of an Intimacy Director. I had just finished directing a heightened scene from the play “The Flick” by Annie Baker. I remember the actors looking at me with nervousness and hesitation as we began to move through the scene. By the time we got to the end, they both expressed feelings of relief and comfort after having worked with me, and something unlocked in my heart.

I care so much about actors and people in general. I’ve always known that my purpose as a storyteller was intrinsically linked with equality, consent, and inclusivity. Concepts that are deeply valued by Intimacy Coordinators and Directors. It is not lost on me that this position has only existed for a number of years in its current form. I am so grateful to be alive and a part of this industry while it is making such a significant shift of growth. Intimacy work is the future, and I am excited to be a part of it.

Emilia comes from a place of such love, passion, and compassion when she approaches the work, which is contagious but also deeply inspiring.  She created an environment of freedom, exploration, inspiration, and safety. She explains things clearly but kindly.

Working with her and our director felt like a true artistic partnership. It was truly a profound experience. I can only hope that many, many more artists get the chance to work with Emilia so that they can feel the bedrock of their work shift in the way that I have.
