Who is Emila Ray?
I began directing while still in school as a way to always be involved in the creative process. I have since directed many plays and readings and have been lucky enough to bring to life the original works of writers I greatly respect. I’ve worked with incredible actors and collaborated with people who are experts in their departments. I can never get over how much I learn every time I am in this role.
As a director, I am the most proud of my short “A Broadway Body.” This piece felt deeply personal as it explored the harmful expectations of the musical theatre industry. The themes of body dysmorphia, disordered eating, and, ultimately, self-love led to the film's recognition at the LA International Shorts Festival, the Atlanta Women’s Film Festival, and many more.
Working professionally as a director can include a lot of pressure to balance and always have the answers. I love this challenge and strive to be an excellent communicator and storyteller. I work to surround myself with kind people who work hard and remember how much fun this storytelling is and how important it is in my life.
